Kearsley Academy is a buzz with books this week as we proudly launched our second Reading Routes for Y7 and Y8 students. Our Y7 students are drawing up the anchor and setting a sail on their Explorer Route, which features a blend of new and classical fiction, while our Y8 students are dusting for fingerprints and donning deer stalkers as they follow the trail of clues and embark on their Crime Route.
Five of our most avid readers were rewarded last term with a visit to author, Sophie Anderson. Further incredible opportunities await our budding bookworms as they begin their latest journey into different genres of literature.
We are proud to be readers at Kearsley Academy and students have been extremely forthcoming in their positive feedback for the Reading Route programme. Connie is half-way through the first book in her Crime Route: “I am really enjoying reading A Long Way Down because it is like a mystery on every page. It is so interesting and I can’t wait to finish it and find out what happens at the end!” This passion for reading and intrigue is exactly what we were hoping to develop through our Reading Routes programme.
Amber has – only three days since the launch of the new Route – completed all five books in her Route! Amber said: “Before I started Reading Routes, I didn’t really read much and my vocabulary wasn’t the best. Now, I have expanded my vocabulary and found books that really interest me!”
Alongside Reading Routes, this week the Academy launched an accompanying ‘Beyond Reading Routes’ programme, designed to stretch and challenge our top readers. Alfie attended the club after school and Tuesday, leaving with a huge grin on his face and his brand new copy of Lord of the Flies clutched tightly in hand: “I love the Beyond Reading Routes club as I have found more people who share my love of reading. I can make friends and challenge myself with harder books!”
