Transition at Kearsley Academy

Kearsley Academy is a thriving close community Academy with over 630 students on roll and numbers rising significantly each year. Despite the Academy’s increasing popularity, our staff maintain a relentless focus to ensure that every student has the best possible education. We achieve this by having exceptionally high expectations of our teaching staff and students as well as focusing on the importance of always striving to do better.

By choosing Northern Education Trust Kearsley Academy, parents can be certain they are selecting the best school for their child; one where they will not only succeed academically, but will benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular enrichment activities. As a student, you will be coming to a school that has a stimulating and exciting environment – where you will achieve your potential and make life-long friends. Students from each year group become familiar with each other as a result of being an academy of 637 students in conjunction with our vertical mentoring groups which ensures students not only know each other within their year but also from other year groups, giving us a community feel. Our highly supervised KS3 and KS4 split lunch times also allows for our students to become familiar and make friendships with their peers of a similar age.

Kearsley Academy is committed to a child centred transition process in which the individual needs of students are identified and supported. In order to achieve this, we work in close collaboration with our partner primary schools to share information to ease the transition from primary to secondary education. The pastoral care offered to students at Kearsley Academy is second to none. Our team of pastoral specialists combine a child centred and caring ethos with years of experience supporting young people. Each year group has a Learning Manager; a non-teaching member of staff whose role is dedicated to making sure that children are supported. The pastoral team ensure that students have the best possible transition from Year 6 into Year 7. Moving to secondary school is an exciting time in a child’s life but it can also lead to anxieties for both children and parents. At Kearsley Academy we offer a number of support mechanisms so that students can start Year 7 feeling happy and confident about their future.

The transition process of Year 6 students to Kearsley Academy begins prior to the summer term before joining. We have a variety of opportunities for students to attend our Academy whilst still at their primary school. In the Autumn Term our partner primary schools host representatives from Kearsley Academy who meet with Year 6 students to answer questions and to distribute invites to the Kearsley Academy Open Evening. Recently our local primary schools have been invited to a wide variety of sports and technology events as well as our academy staff often visiting the primary schools as a friendly face.

Our most recent open evening was exceptionally well attended with over 400 people in attendance, representing our ever growing reputation within the local community. We also operate an ‘open door’ policy, allowing parents and students to make an appointment and tour the school during a normal working day. The benefit of this is that parents can see our outstanding students and experience the learning environment for themselves.

During the transition process we invest time in getting to know the students so they are familiar with members of staff around the school; our staff are always available to offer help or re-assurance when needed. We ensure the most common worries like ‘who do I go to if I have a problem?’, ‘what do I do if I don’t feel well?’, and ‘what if I get lost?’ are answered before students join us. Parents and students also have the opportunity to meet with our SENCO if required. Our aim is that, at the end of transition process, students feel excited about joining us.

If prospective parents and students have any questions about our transition process, please contact the Academy on 01204 332555 or e-mail questions directly to [email protected]
